My name is Ankica Mitrovska, born and raised in Skopje, Macedonia. I spent 10 years (2006-2015) in United States where I got my BA and MFA degrees. I came back to Macedonia at the end of 2015 to develop an interesting project, a Brashnar Artist-in-Residence program as well as when free time allows to continue developing my own art
work.
In my work, I introduce androgynous cartoon-like humanoid mutant characters in different sizes, shapes, and roles. These characters are consisted of different metaphors infused with sarcasm and ambiguity. I am interested in the dualities of aggressor and victim, powerful and vulnerable, the same way along which politically driven ideologies are implemented in global contemporary society. Thus, different means of control such as surveillance over people, controlled media, and propagation of fear create social anxieties of isolation, oppression, and division.
